How to register your nickname, request a hostmask and send a memo.
1. Register your nickname: This allows you access everything in services, such as sending memo's, registering your own channel, or being added as an operator on an existing channel, as well as everything else below. It's the same really as registering on a forum - it allows you to have a unique identity. To do this, while in IRC, type the following and hit enter, substituting the password and email address with your own choices:
/msg nickserv register password email
When you connect to IRC in the future and wish to login to nickserv, you type:
/msg nickserv identify password
Most IRC clients have a section to automatically send this message when they connect, or even a place to put the nickserv password specifically.

2. Request a virtual hostname for yourself:

Two things about this: On most IRC servers it would show his real IP address, but on madchat we have a security system that cloaks it for your privacy. However, it's ugly. Imagine if spectre came into apple and we saw:

Cool eh? Well, err, at least a big improvement over what was there before. You might see, incidentally, people commonly have a smart remark in their signoff (disconnection) message. In a sense, a virtual host (vhost) is a kind of "signon" message that shows who you are. If you've set your IRC client to identify you to nickserv, it joins #apple, all you'll have to do is run your irc program and you're all set.
To request a virtual host: /hostserv request whatever.domain.you.want.
3. Send memo's: As mentioned above, you can send someone a message, very handy when they are offline.
/msg memoserv send nickname message
You can list, read and delete messages with the following commands:
/msg memoserv list
/msg memoserv read number
/msg memoserv del number
The number of a message is shown with the list command. For the full list of options:
