IRCd and Services move.

Moofspeak has, since its conception, used UnrealIRCd and Anope for it's IRC daemon and services respectively.  However, while feature rich, there has been considerable uncertainty about the stability of both.  After some investigation, we've decided to switch the network over to using the Charybdis IRCd and matching Atheme services.  Charybdis, for starters, compiles 100% cleanly and though not so relevant to our small network, performs far better than Unreal.

Our plan for the changeover will be in three stages:

  • The first is that approximately half our servers will be taken offline (and out of DNS), set up and tested. This is happening now.
  • The second stage will be that services are locked and exported from Anope into Atheme and the DNS switched over to the new net.  This will be done on a single day.
  • The third stage will be setting up the remainder of the servers after people have moved across while we help people with transition questions.

The new IRCd and Services, while essentially the same functionally as what we're using now, do have some differences.  I hope to write a guide with frequently asked questions in time for the actual change-over day.  Most importantly though, user and channel settings will be preserved, so you'll be able to connect and log in as usual.

During the transition it's very important that you only connect to IRC.MOOFSPEAK.NET and not any of the individual servers.  If you've set your client to use a particular server, please set it to use the main address as both servers and IP addresses will be changing.
