Welcome

Welcome to the Moofspeak IRC Network. Created as a collaboration between two pre-existing networks, our primary focus is Mac-centric channels. However, we welcome anyone who wants a stable and non-political home for their channel.

Our network consists of around 10 client servers and a full set of services.

Unlike large networks, we have the same sense of community and selflessly helping others that you find almost all the way through the Mac enthusiast community. Don't hesitate at any time to drop into #Moofspeak and/or msg one of us if you have any queries.

You are also welcome to contact us through this web site, such as if you're having trouble connecting.

Quick Commands

Register your nickname:
/msg nickserv register password email@address
Don't forget your password! We cannot recover it if you forget it!

Login (identify) your nick whenever you connect to IRC:
/msg nickserv identify password
Many IRC programs have a place to put your nickserv password so you can automatically login.

Request a virtual hostmask:
/msg hostserv request something.com
It must have at least one "." in it for the request to work.  Opers will then approve requested hostmasks at regular intervals.

See here for more detail.

Hub Transition complete

After our old hub became unreliable, we sought out a new location for it, for which Phibs offered us one of his best co-located machines. The result of all the efforts by reverett, cmoski and others is that we now, once again, have a stable hub and services machine. An added benefit was that we got another good leaf server with the deal, va.us.moofspeak.net.

Since this is now complete, another good deal one of our netadmins, dave, managed to get on a co-located server has given us the opportunity to de-comission a couple of servers that were run off business ADSL and the like and instead merge them into a new server. A reduction in our power bills and no more lightning strikes taking out connections will make us all happy.

Tor and open proxy ban.

Regrettably after abuse by a handful of people, we've had to put in a tor and open-proxy ban on the network. Should you connect from your regular address (not using a proxy server) and get a message, such as:
You are in the XBL.spamhaus.org DNSBL. http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=123.234.132.213
but you are not running a proxy, you may have an IP address that was previously flagged as sending spam or having an open relay. To get around this, you may need to reset your internet connect to obtain another IP address.

If you are having issues, you are welcome to contact us and we will do our best to fix the problem.

However, the easiest thing to do is, go to DNS Stuff, type your IP into the spam blacklist checker and if you get any major red flags (you will if our proxy checker automatically banned you) then you can apply to the spam blacklists to have your ip removed. If your ISP has a large number of blacklisted IP's (they can be blacklisted for YEARS without being removed) then contact them and ask them to fix things).

New Hub, and rules page

First.. We are replacing our hub for greater service requirements and to fix the network connectivity issues we've had over the last few days.  You may experience momentary connection interruptions from time to time tonight, but everything should be fine.

Check out the new rules page. It's in english now, and I think it mostly covers it. If you have any questions/comments/quips, head over to #moofspeak.
